Madam Speaker: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the U.S. Speaker of the House

(August 1–7, 2021)

On Wednesday, Madam Speaker welcomed the new Ambassador, Mariangela Zappia of Italy, to the United States at the Capitol to discuss COVID-19 response and recovery, advancing international security and stability, and addressing the climate crisis. Later, the Speaker joined Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senators Patty Murray, Kirsten Gillibrand and Ron Wyden, and paid leave advocates to speak at the Paid Leave for All National Bus Tour Stop. She also joined House Democrats for a bill enrollment photo opportunity for H.R. 3325, to award Congressional Gold Medals to USCP and those who protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. On Friday, Madam Speaker held her weekly press conference in the U.S. Capitol.

Take a look at this week’s behind-the-scenes photos:

August 4

“The ties between our two nations are uniquely strong because of our shared priorities and the vital role Italy has played in our history. As Ambassador Zappia takes on this position, may the strong bonds between the US and Italy continue to grow!”
“Paid leave is about parents, it’s about children — and it’s about time! With Democrats’ Build Back Better agenda, we’ll fight for this vital benefit and get parents earning and children learning.”
“This historic legislation honors their service and their sacrifice.”

August 6

“Paychecks are growing at strongest rate in 15 years, poverty is set to be cut in half and the economy is growing at fastest pace in 40 years. Now, we will build on the momentum by investing in families: more jobs, cut taxes, lower costs.”
