Madam Speaker: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the U.S. Speaker of the House

On Monday, Speaker Pelosi visited the Maryland Fire Museum, the new home of the fireboat named in honor of her father: the “Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro, Jr.” She then joined President Biden, Vice President Harris and Members of Congress at the White House for the signing of H.R. 352, the Commission To Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture Act.
On Tuesday morning, Speaker Pelosi held a staff meeting with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. In the afternoon, she signed S. 3580, the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022, which will crack down on unfair shipping practices, level the playing field for exporters and bring down costs for working families. In the evening, she swore in Congresswoman-elect Connie Conway (CA-22).
Speaker Pelosi, on Wednesday afternoon, joined the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to celebrate the tenthanniversary of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). On Thursday morning, Speaker Pelosi held her weekly press conference. In the afternoon, she held a staff meeting with Areej Al Sadhan, a constituent whose brother Abdulrahman Al Sadhan was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Saudi Arabia for anonymous, satirical tweets. Then, she met with Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to discuss the Congress’ united and unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.
