Madam Speaker: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the U.S. Speaker of the House

On Monday, Madam Speaker met with Speaker Anthony Rendon of the California State Assembly. Later in the day, she joined a virtual meeting with His Excellency Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Ambassador Oksana Markarova of Ukraine. On Tuesday, the Speaker met with Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski of Warsaw, Poland to discuss Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine.
Speaker Pelosi started her Wednesday by joining Members of Congress to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day, honoring those murdered in the Shoah and listening to survivors’ stories. Later, she met with Holly J. Mitchell, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
Thursday morning, the Speaker addressed the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) Annual Conference at the Washington Hilton. Back at the United States Capitol, she welcomed Her Excellency President Salome Zourabichvili of Georgia for a bilateral meeting. Madam Speaker next joined Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, Senator Maria Cantwell and Chairman Frank Pallone for a press conference on Democrats’ legislative efforts to lower gas prices for American families.
In the afternoon, she welcomed Her Excellency Dr. Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, President of the Republic of Kosovo, for a bilateral meeting; hosted a Tibet Executive Committee strategy meeting with Chairman James McGovern and Congresswoman Barbara Lee; and met with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of the democratic opposition of Belarus. Later, she joined House Majority Whip James Clyburn to sign the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site Expansion Act before meeting with The Honorable Prime Minister Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago. Madam Speaker then joined Ambassador Markarova of Ukraine and Members of Congress to open a powerful new photo exhibit in the Capitol, highlighting the horrors inflicted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
