Madam Speaker: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the U.S. Speaker of the House

Tuesday, Madam Speaker joined the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs to hear from the veteran services community about many important priorities, including bolstering equitable VA infrastructure & addressing toxic exposure.

Wednesday, she joined the League of Conservation Voters, Senator Schumer, House and Senate Democrats and advocates for a press conference to highlight the importance of investing in climate, jobs and justice. Later that morning, Madam Speaker held her weekly press conference in the U.S. Capitol. Following the press conferences, Madam Speaker welcomed His Excellency Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, to the U.S. Capitol before a bipartisan leadership meeting to discuss how our nations can work together to ensure regional security and stability, crush the pandemic, further economic growth and development, and combat the climate crisis.

Later that afternoon, the Speaker joined Members of Congress and the International Campaign for Tibet for a virtual strategy meeting and to reaffirm America’s strong support for the people of Tibet. Speaker Pelosi next sat down with Rev. Al Sharpton, the family of Martin Luther King III and members of the National Action Network (NAN) to discuss Democrats progress on protecting voting rights. Then, the Speaker met with Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to discuss the updates on work to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, Madam Speaker delivered remarks at the first hearing of the Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth, where she reaffirmed Democrats’ commitment to ensuring our economy works for everyone, while powering stronger growth for years to come.

Friday, Speaker Pelosi held a ceremonial swearing-in for Representative. Jake Ellzey (TX-6). That afternoon, the Speaker joined Members of House Democratic Leadership for a press conference to highlight Democratic achievements For The People in the 117th Congress and discuss House Democrats’ upcoming legislative agenda. She later held a bill enrollment ceremony for H.R. 3237, the Emergency Security Supplemental to Respond to January 6th Appropriations Act, to sign important legislation that delivers robust resources to strength the Capitol, support our law enforcement heroes and protect our Congressional community.
