Madam Speaker: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the U.S. Speaker of the House

On Monday, Madam Speaker joined Golden State Opportunity, parents and advocates for a virtual press event as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Child Tax Credit Awareness Day to ensure parents know about the American Rescue Plan’s historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit and how it will benefit their families. On Tuesday, Madam Speaker spoke with Israeli Foreign Minister Lapid to congratulate him on his new position and the new government and discuss the strong relationship and shared values between the two countries. Wednesday, the Speaker joined Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Michael Turner and bipartisan Members of Congress for the introduction of the Vanessa Guillén Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act. Thursday, Speaker Pelosi held her weekly press conference today in the Capitol Visitor Center, announcing the establishment of a Select Committee on the January 6th Insurrection to uncover the truth behind the deadly attack on our democracy. On Friday morning, Speaker Pelosi met with His Excellency Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, ahead of a bipartisan leadership meeting.

The Democrats’ American Rescue Plan included an historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit, which will benefit 27 million families and cut child poverty in half. The bill is making a difference for families, particularly communities of color —helping children in need, putting parents back to work and empowering our economy.

With great solemnity and sadness, I’m announcing that the House will be establishing a Select Committee on the January 6th Insurrection. It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day, ensure that an attack of that kind cannot happen and that we root out the causes of it all.

Despite the GOP’s cowardly failure to defend our Constitution, the January 6th Select Committee will investigate the truth of the desecration of the Capitol that resulted in multiple deaths, injury to over 140 law enforcement officers, and terror among staff, workers and Representatives.

Honored to welcome His Excellency Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, to the Capitol of the United States. We have built a valuable and personal relationship between our two countries for the past twenty years. As we enter a new phase of that relationship, I look forward to working with President Ghani to strengthen it, including protecting gains for women and girls.
